How to tie a scarf

Wearing a scarf should look effortlessly chic, like you just tossed it on.  If it starts looking like you tried too hard, take it off and start over.  The end result should look polished but not forced.  It is okay if it takes a bit of effort to look effortless.

Though there are many ways to tie a scarf, the always stylish Europeans seem to skip the complicated knots and instead choose one of the following looks:

Wrap

This simple wrap is the best way to show off a really gorgeous scarf.

-Drape scarf behind your neck, bringing the ends in front of you.

-Toss the ends over your shoulders, one at a time.

-Fluff and rearrange the front until it looks effortless.  If it starts looking like you tried too hard, take it off and start over.

Reverse Wrap

-Start with the middle of the scarf in front of your neck

-Toss the ends over your shoulders

-Wrap them around your neck and let them hang in the front.

-Adjust the front so that the ends are hanging under the neckline.

-Fluff and rearrange the front until it looks effortless.  If it starts looking like you tried too hard, take it off and start over.

This is a great way to wear spring and summer scarves.  Just let the neckline hang loosely in warmer weather.

Double Wrap

A perfectly chic wrap for the coldest weather

-Drape the scarf behind your neck, bringing the ends in front of you.

-Take one end and wrap it all the way around your neck and back to the front

-Repeat with the other side.

Wrapped this way, the scarf will be very thick and will most likely reach the bottom of your chin.

Loop Through

The simplest way to wear a scarf.  It is easy to do, even without a mirror.

-Fold the scarf in half lengthwise.

-Drape scarf around back of your neck with folded end over one shoulder.

-Pull long ends through the loop.

-Tighten, then straighten so the loose ends hang straight down.

-Fluff the part around the back and sides of your neck.

This is a versatile tie that works well with almost any scarf.  Best worn in colder weather.

Other Looks

It is perfectly okay to wear a scarf without wrapping it, especially if it is a gorgeous cashmere you want to show off.  Simply drape it around your neck and let it hang or throw just one end over your shoulder.  With scarves, anything goes… as long as it looks effortlessly chic.
